Scott E Coombes

February 28, 1952 — January 16, 2023

Having fought the good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith, Scott Elza Coombes met his Savior face to face on January 16, 2023. Scott was born at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Maurice and Betty Coombes (Davis). Scott loved music, art, riding horses, and having outdoor adventures with his siblings Gloria Ball, Barbara (Bud) Austin, Glen Coombes and Mark (Trina) Coombes. While attending Bible Center in Terre Haute, Scott made the most important decision in his life by putting his faith and trust in Jesus as his Savior. Scott obtained the rank of Eagle Scout while in high school. He graduated from Gerstmeyer Tech in 1970 and then enlisted with the Marine Corp where he served with pride as a paratrooper in the First Angelico from 1973 to 1975. After his honorable discharge, he attended Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Theology in 1977.  While attending college, he met the love of his life, the beautiful Donna Provines. They married December 16, 1976, and spent forty-six wonderful years in marriage and ministry. Scott ministered in five churches before accepting the pastorate at the Lyford Bible Baptist Church on April 7, 1984, where he would minister until he retired on September 13, 2020. During these years they raised four children: Rachel (Jim) Larger, Jason (Kimberly) Coombes, Jeremy (Julie) Coombes, and Rebekah (who would lose a battle with cancer at age five).  All of his children followed in their father’s footsteps by entering the ministry. Later in life, he was thrilled to experience the joys of being a grandpa and enjoyed spoiling Scott, Madelynn, Katie, Micah, Ethan, Emersyn, Andrew, Becky, Caleb, Lana, Bekah, Luke, and Ben.  Although he faced many health struggles that weakened his body, his resolve to live for the Lord never wavered. He was a faithful servant until the end.

Pastor Coombes was known for his love. He loved his family, his congregation, and most of all the Lord. He loved encouraging others and mentored many young men who went into ministry. He led the Wabash Valley Pastor’s Fellowship for many years and loved his brothers in Christ. His visits, words of wisdom, and steadfast faithfulness will be greatly missed.

Visitation for Pastor Coombes will be on Thursday, January 19, from 4 to 8 PM

at the Lyford Bible Baptist Church. Funeral services will also be at the church on Friday, January 20, at 10 AM with Pastor Jeremy Coombes officiating. A graveside service at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Clinton, Indiana,  will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lyford Bible Baptist Church Camp Fund.
