Other Information: Backpacking and outdoor lover
Michael had a tremendous enthusiasm for backpacking through many remote areas. He backpacked up and down much of the Western Hemisphere from the grizzly bear pine forests of Alaska to many of the high alpine and volcanic lakes of South America's mountainous Tierra del Fuego.
Michael said that he found himself reminiscing about the kinds of outdoors experiences that had intrigued him during his own youth. When he was growing up in Indianapolis, his father had a love for the woods. His father’s hobby was planting walnut trees, and he often took Michael along as he planted. When Michael was a boy, he went on to attend a CYO youth camp where he worked on pioneer villages; when he entered the Boy Scouts, he earned 42 merit badges. In the summertime, he visited the farm of his uncle, Sam Vorek, in rural Vermillion County, and there he would go out and explore the woods.
Michael often used to say “I learned that everywhere in nature there is something wonderful and that you only needed to have the eyes to see it.” Another favorite quote from him was “There's no way to sense creation as vibrantly as on a backpacking trip when you're on your own. It's the constant challenge of survival without cell phones to intrude on your spiritual renewal.”
Tennis
Michael started his love for tennis when he was a teenager. He played for his high school in Indianapolis and later for his college, St. Louis University where he was a Collegiate Division I Tennis Player. He never stopped playing tennis, in fact he was the tennis coach for the girls tennis team at SVHS and coached his daughter, Elizabeth Tindera from the time she was 3 years old.
Family and Friends
Michael was a true giver. He really loved helping his patients with pain management. There was not time a patient could not call Michael, he always was available for them. He cherished all the time he spent with his family and friends. His favorite holiday was Thanksgiving because it was the time of sharing and celebrating all blessings with everyone. Michael enjoyed taking his family backpacking, hiking, camping and kayaking to distant and remote areas. Be able to share nature with Sol Angel and Elizabeth brought Michael great personal joy.
